Welcome. My name is Garrett Coan. I am the founder and director of the Center for Creative Counseling. During my many years of practice, I have helped hundreds of people master their issues and take control of their lives. My specialty area of practice is in helping people overcome perfectionism. Learning how to deal with perfectionism requires learning new skills. For instance, one must learn how to communicate assertively and avoid what I term, "perfectionism paralysis". "Perfectionism paralysis" involves thought processes that can completely incapacitate a person. Through a unique and customized approach which focuses on skill-building, I tailor-make a plan that targets your unique form of "perfectionism paralysis" in order to create an unshakable mindset. Your perfectionism is oftentimes the root cause of the following emotional conditions: anxiety, depression, OCD, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety, PTSD, Phobia. It also exacerbates symptoms of ADHD. Perfectionism is keeping you from living the life you want to lead. I can help you, once and for all, finally overcome perfectionism so that you can experience joy and productivity once again.
In order to provide you with the highest level of comfort and convenience, I offer phone counseling as my primary service:
Phone Counseling.
Your first counseling session will be an intake session that will be 60 minutes long. In that session, I will get to know you in depth and the way you express your particular form of perfectionism. I will then be in an excellent position to formulate a customized game plan designed to target the specific causes of your perfectionism. Follow up sessions are 45 minutes long.
Here are some of the benefits of phone counseling in the treatment of perfectionism:
1) Many people suffering from perfectionism find it easier to express their thoughts and feelings via phone counseling than within the traditional psychotherapy context. Such individuals feel less inhibited within the phone counseling format, since their physical appearance and facial expressions are not being observed by the phone therapist. Moreover, such sensitive and personal subject matter, such as forgiveness, assertiveness, can be pursued with openness and transparency as the phone counseling relationship possesses a certain degree of anonymity.
2) Phone counseling offers a feeling of safety for those people whose perfectionism makes them feel uncomfortable disclosing intimate details of their life in front of another person.
3) Phone counseling is a wonderful option for the homebound
and geographically isolated. It is also quite effective for individuals whose
perfectionism causes great social anxiety or agoraphobia. In addition,
individuals who struggle with both perfectionism and ADD often get distracted
by visual stimuli such as the therapist's gestures and mannerisms. Phone
counseling cuts out this frustrating layer of distraction, enabling the client
to better focus on the issues being discussed.
4) Phone counseling presents a viable alternative to office
visits for those people who are concerned about the issues of stigma and
confidentiality (i.e., bumping into a friend or acquaintance in the waiting
room).
5) Phone counseling can be very convenient. Instead of traveling and spending on gas, the individual can schedule his or her sessions when he or she wants, within the complete privacy of the home or office. Remote conferencing allows for third parties to be brought into the counseling process so as promote healing within relationships.
In summary, telephone counseling presents a wonderful resource for individuals who struggle with perfectionism to grow and heal. Phone counseling also possesses great flexibility. An individual may begin with phone counseling and then choose to switch to office-based counseling as circumstances change.
