Couples Therapy Bergen County and Northern New Jersey

Infidelity Couples Therapy / Bergen County & North Jersey

When you discover infidelity and that your partner has cheated on you, your initial reaction is one of shock, anger and sadness. You feel betrayed and rejected. Your feelings of trust, safety and security within the relationship will be greatly impacted. Couples therapy allows a couple to express their feelings of vulnerability and insecurity in a safe space under the professional guidance of an expert couples therapist. As your couples therapist, I will give the two of you the comfort and courage to be vulnerable and honest with your partner. I will encourage candor and transparency, allowing both of you to express your confusion and worry regarding whether trust can ever be restored and if the relationship can be salvaged  and healed. I will help the two of you modify your defensive stance and cultivate an atmosphere where you can communicate empathy and validation to each other. With sensitivity and understanding, the desire to extend forgiveness can begin to take hold.

In my couples therapy Bergen County / North NJ practice, I help couples heal and grow in the wake of infidelity. I help my clients identify the underlying causes of infidelity both within the dynamic of the relationship and related to any issues either party may be struggling with personally.

Factors Contributing To Infidelity

Factors that can make a couple susceptible to infidelity are poor communication skills, a perceived lack of empathy and validation as well feeling neglected when it comes to physical affection and sexual intimacy. Eventually, both parties can come to feel lonely and disconnected. When both parties can no longer relate to one another and engage in frequent arguments, feelings of hopelessness emerge and infidelity is more likely to occur. At times when the relationship is weakened and under great stress, people are vulnerable and seek out emotional support and connection outside the relationship.

In my couples therapy NJ practice, I treat infidelity by improving communication and restoring the capacity for empathy, support and understanding. By enhancing the couple’s ability to assertively express their feelings and needs while receiving reassurance and validation, I help restore the couple’s sense of safety and attachment.
